Buchla is a manufacturer of electronic musical instruments such as synthesizers and MIDI controllers. Don Buchla made the original Buchla Music Box in 1963. This synthesizer was built using several "modules" that can generate or modify music. The boxes serve specific functions for the synthesizer: oscillator, filter, sample and hold, and more. This effects the pitch,timbre, amplitude and also spacial location of the sound. It allows electronic musicians to create sounds suited to their own needs in a less time consuming way than previous products. With the Buchla Box musicians can bend and manipulate sounds using just one instrument. This product from Buchla would inspire many of the electronic instruments available on the music gear market today. Along with the Moog synthesizers. Buchlas products has revolutionized the way music and sound is made electronically. Don Buchla and Robert Moog simultaneously invented the modular synthesizer in 1963. Moog from NY and Buchla from San Fransisco. Don Buchla prefers not to call his instruments synthesizers, he feels that name gives an impression of imitating existing sounds and instruments. He wants to make new electronic music instruments for creating entirely new sounds. The omission of the standardized keyboard on the Buchla instruments is helping them achieve this feel. Buchla developed modular synthesizers into the 1980's, later that decade the company shifted focus to develop MIDI controllers. Buchla also worked with Oberheim in some projects during the 1990's but in the early 2000's he shifted back to making modular synthesizers. Buchla then released the full electronic instrument called the Buchla 200e.
