Eigenharp demo at Musikmesse

There's been a big buzz around the Eigenharp the last year or so. It is a very interesting instrument, which gives you expressive possibilities that you simply don't have in any other instrument. The inventors were long time electronic music fans experimenting with computers to make the music they craved for. They missed the live performance possibilities and decided to develop the best instrument for live electronic music. After 8 years designing, exeperimenting and prototyping the Eigenharp Alpha and Pico was released in late 2009.

The Eigenharp from Eigenlabs now comes in three models, the flagship Alpha (from £3995), the mid-level Tau (from £1899) and the small Pico (£399). At Musikmesse, Eigenlabs demoed the different Eigenharps, and it was interesting to see what can be made with it. But I guess it takes a lot of practice, and patience to be really good at it. Enjoy the demo we filmed at Musikmesse.

Musikmesse: Karlax Unveiled - Eigenharp Gets Rival

Seems like Eigenharp gets a competitor. The band in the Mos Eisley cantina has clearly had a huge effect on the Star Wars generation. Interesting piece!

Pressrelease:

DA FACT, an innovative French company specialising in the manufacture of instruments exclusively for the digital musical and visual arts, has marked its presence at the MusikMesse in Frankfurt by unveiling Karlax.

Karlax is the first controller to re-establish the artist's body at the heart of the performance. This instrument's revolutionary ergonomic design uses the artist's own natural movements. Its wireless technology (using radio-waves and MIDI protocol trough USB) gives musicians freedom on stage. Its high-resolution sensors offer a finesse of performance and open up as yet uncharted creative waters.

Karlax takes its natural place in the chain of digital creation and expression, making it possible to leverage and enhance the potential offered by every type of composition, recording, editing and performance software and hardware.

Karlax is the first musical and visual controller to be produced, the fruit of 7 years of intensive research and development. Karlax provides intense pleasure during a performance as it offers the artist a wealth of very expressive movements which can be accessed in a simple, intuitive manner. Its sensors are fitted to precision mechanics components. The innovative architecture allows pistons, keys, switches, benders, triggers, a rotation axis and an inertial unit (comprising an inclinometer, accelerometer and a 3-axis gyroscope) to be activated separately or simultaneously. An embedded screen for displaying and editing settings makes it possible to safely leave the computer off stage. With the product comes also a dedicated software compatible with both MAC and PC.

This instrument, which is totally portable and wireless, offers artists unrivalled freedom in terms of performance and expression, both in the studio and on stage. Karlax allows composers to go far beyond using the normal controls for operating and manipulating sound generators, whether in the form of hardware or software.

Karlax offers a new artistic solution to this technological challenge and fully leverages the potential of sound generators, which have been under-utilised in real time use until now.

"Karlax pushes the boundaries of language," says Nils Aziosmanoff, Chairman of LE CUBE, the leading creative centre devoted entirely to the digital arts. "The creative process is increasingly becoming an experience to savour: we are adopting an exploratory approach to creativity, instead of the previous contemplative, passive approach."

Thanks to Karlax, the first product in its professional range, DA FACT is now proving that these new instruments which are revolutionising the digital creation chain can be produced at levels matching industrial quantities and quality. Since January 2010 DA FACT has joined forces with the PARROT Group (global leader for wireless peripherals for mobile phones) to strengthen its production and commercialisation phase for Karlax.

An initial, limited numbered series has been announced for Q4, for an estimated price of 3500€ (excluding VAT)

Karlax is an innovative meta-controller which is entirely re-challenging digital arts.

Eigenharp jumps over the pond

We have followed the development of the Eigenharp with great interest. This interesting musical instrument was put on the market a few months ago in Britain. Now we hear that they will be on the market in the states aswell. The Eigenharp will be unveiled on the NAMM show on january 14 where both the Alpha and Pico models will be on display. Musicians will also demonstrate the instruments live on stage. Theres is also a rumour going that a third model will be presented at this event. Check this clip out, I really want to try one of these!

More Eigenharp

Heres a clip from the Eigenharp roadshow at Air studios. A very cool instrument I have to say. Like someone commented earlier, it reminds you of the instruments that the alien band is playing in the Mos Eisley cantina scene from Star Wars!

Eigenharp + Kaleidophon

It's always nice when pople think outside the box, like for example Eigenlabs. Where ordinary people think "Let's make this keyboard keyboard-shaped", Eigenlabs thinks "No, let's make it into a vertical stick instead, with keys and a saxophone thingy on it".

Eigenlabs has spent seven years developing the "eigenharp", which offers 120 "highly expressive keys", a built-in step sequencer and a wide variety of control options. And it looks nice, with lots of lights on it and a cool black finish.

So if you are one of those who thinks your regular keyboard isn't vertical enough, check out the Eigenharp! It kind of reminds me of the "Kaleidophon" developed by David Vorhaus, doesn't it?

I Have Synth

Biography:

Been into synthesizers for 15 years, but never a technical geek. I'm a member of the band Velours Perfect, and have had electronic music as a hobby since I stopped playing with G.I Joe Figures. I buy and sell synths all the time, sometimes manically, and my favourite synth varies, right now it is the Alesis Ion. On this blog you can read about whatever comes out of my mind, mostly synthesizer-related stuff though. Bzzt!

I'm also on Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, YouTube, Vimeo and off course Ihavesynth.
